Calm Through Colors

During every Storytime kids yoga session here at Prancing Pony Prana, I work to help my mini yogis discover the joy of movement, breath, and mindfulness. While their curiosity and energy are contagious, keeping their attention sometimes feels like chasing butterflies without a net! That’s why I’m always searching for creative ways to make pranayama – our breathing practice – more fun and accessible to those little bodies (and big hearts)!
Breathing is our body’s built-in calm button. When children learn to notice and guide their breath, they gain valuable tools for self-regulation, confidence, and focus. The science confirms what yogis have known for thousands of years: steady, mindful breathing slows the heart rate and tells the brain, “I’m safe.” Of course, explaining that to a kindergartner doesn’t always land. Visuals help. Movement helps. Which is precisely where the Luma Cube shines – literally!
The Luma Cube (https://www.luma3.uk/) was designed to help people create everyday wellness habits for a calmer, more intentional life. It’s a screen-free way to show kids the rhythm of inhaling, holding, and exhaling – pranayama – along with the cube’s light that rises, pulses, and fades in various colors and patterns. There are no distracting icons… just intuitive motion sensors and gentle tactile buttons. The design is Japandi: clean lines, natural warmth, and a soothing glow that blends into any space.
In my yoga classes, the Luma Cube can open the session, close the session, or both! We gather on our mats, legs crossed, eyes soft, and I explain that we’re about to practice our breathing “superpower.” The light rises and we inhale through our noses. It pauses and we hold it in. Then it fades and we all slowly exhale.
Because the color shifts so gradually, even the tiniest children stay mesmerized. The cube gives their busy eyes something to rest upon. Their minds naturally follow the rhythm. I can change the cube’s mode to match different breathing patterns, options that keep things fresh and let kids discover the ones that feel best in their own bodies. If one child connects to even one breathing technique, that’s a win in my book!
The Luma Cube helps me, my family, and my students remember to breathe. It is just one more way to embody what Prancing Pony Prana stands for: playful mindfulness rooted in real techniques. The world can be noisy, bright, and move fast – especially for young children. The Luma Cube helps the mini yogis at Prancing Pony pause in the middle of all that and simply be. If mindfulness is about meeting the moment as it is, then the breath – and a little pop of color – make that moment so much easier to pinpoint.
Namaste! - Jen
